Vuốt đâu xuống đất, cánh đâu lên trời.

Tú bà tốc thẳng đến nơi,

Hằm hằm áp điệu một hơi lại nhà.

Hung hăng chẳng hỏi chẳng tra,

Đang tay vùi liễu dập hoa tơi bời.
As a normal flesh-and-bone human being,
Thịt da ai cũng là người,
How could she stand the pains so agonizing?
Lòng nào hồng rụng thắm rời chẳng đau?
She knelt down to confess and beg for mercy,
Hết lời thú phục khẩn cầu,
1140. Bending her ripped back, bowing her blooded head.
Uốn lưng thịt đổ, dập đầu máu sa.
Saying: I’m but a girl of slim destiny,
Rằng: “Tôi chút phận đàn bà,
Alone and away from home and family.
Nước non lìa cửa lìa nhà đến đây.
Now the decision is yours, my life or death,
Bây giờ sống thác ở tay,
Whatever it’ll be, I’m willing to accept.
Thân này đã đến thế này thì thôi.
1145. I do not mind any more about myself,
Nhưng tôi có sá chi tôi,
My fate’s done, but how about your capital?
Phận tôi đành vậy, vốn người để đâu?
As an eel not caring of its head dirtied,
Thân lươn bao quản lấm đầu,
From now on I won’t mind my virginity!”
Chút lòng trinh bạch từ sau xin chừa!”
The wench took advantage of Kieu’s concession,
Được lời mụ mới tuỳ cơ,
1150. Forcing a warrantor and a commitment.
Bắt người bảo lãnh, làm tờ cung chiêu.
There was in the house an inmate named Ma Kieu,
Bầy vai có ả Mã Kiều,
Who, out of compassion, risked to guarantee.
Xót nàng ra mới đánh liều chịu đoan.
The wench kept on reproaching rigorously,
Mụ càng kể nhặt kể khoan,
And only pardoned when her demands were met.
Gạn gùng đến mực nồng nàn mới tha.
1155. Helping Kieu to an inner room for a rest,
Vực nàng vào nghỉ trong nhà,
Ma Kieu discreetly conveyed her confidence:
Mã Kiều lại ngỏ ý ra dặn lời:
“You’ve been cheated into the predicament!
“Thôi đà mắc lận thì thôi!
How don’t you know the true nature of So Khanh?
Đi đâu chẳng biết con người Sở Khanh?
That notoriously unfaithful lover,
Bạc tình nổi tiếng lầu xanh,
1160. Who’s himself buried many perfumed flowers.
Một tay chôn biết mấy cành phù dung.
Fake Rescue’s the name of their used maneuver,
Đà đao lập sẵn chước dùng,
They’re not new, this couple of witch and medium.
Lạ gì một cốt một đồng xưa nay.
She should have handed him somewhat thirty liangs,
Có ba mươi lạng trao tay,
To have him make up the scene and play the role.
Không dưng chi có chuyện này trò kia.
1165. You’ll see, he immediately turns about,
Rồi ra trở mặt tức thì,

Bớt lời liệu chớ sân si thiệt đời.”
Kieu said: “With his gravely-sworn words anyhow,
Nàng rằng: “Thề thốt nặng lời,
I didn’t think he’d have been a vicious guy.”
Có đâu mà lại ra người hiểm sâu.”
While she was still thinking about how and why,
Còn đang suy trước nghĩ sau,
1170. His brazen face was seen appear from somewhere.
Mặt mo đã thấy ở đâu dẫn vào.
He raised his voice as if widely to declare:
Sở Khanh lên tiếng rêu rao,
“I’m told that a certain harlot at this place,
Rằng: “Nghe mới có con nào ở đây,
Spreading rumor that I enticed her away,
Phao tin quyến gió rủ mây,
Have a look at my face to see who I am.”
Hãy xem có biết mặt này là ai.”
1175. Kieu said: “It’s all right that everything’s all right!
Nàng rằng: “Thôi thế thì thôi!
If nothing’s happened, I agree it’s nothing.”
Rằng không thì cũng vâng lời rằng không.”
The shameless swindler thundered his fake scolding,
Sở Khanh quát mắng đùng đùng,
Broke in and readied to resort to violence.
Sấn vào vừa rắp thị hùng ra tay.
Kieu said: “May high heaven know what has happened!
Nàng rằng: “Trời nhẽ có hay!
1180. Who seduced, who enticed, who was the guilty?
Quyến anh rủ yến sự này tại ai?
Shoving me down the deep pool without mercy,
Đem người giẩy xuống giếng thơi,
Uttering words then swallowing them at once.
Nói lời rồi lại ăn lời được ngay.
I still keep your hand-written note of escape,
Còn tiên ‘tích việt’ ở tay,
It’s no other one but certainly your face.”
Rõ ràng mặt ấy mặt này chớ ai.”
1185. Her straight words were heard by a crowd in and out,
Lời ngay đông mặt trong ngoài,
They blamed his dishonesty and perfidy.
Kẻ chê bất nghĩa, người cười vô lương.
Being caught a betrayer red-handedly,
Phụ tình án đã rõ ràng,
All ashamed he chose the way of withdrawal.
Dơ tuồng nghỉ mới kiếm đường tháo lui.
Back in her room, Kieu drenched her sorrows in tears,
Buồng riêng riêng những sụt sùi,
1190. She thought of herself and felt deeply sorry:
Nghĩ thân mà lại ngậm ngùi cho thân:
“So now my crystal-pure and snow-white body,
“Tiếc thay trong giá trắng ngần,
Is battered and tattered like all the others!
Đến phong trần cũng phong trần như ai!
Sad or happy it’s a human existence,
Tẻ vui cũng một kiếp người,
But why ill fate always befalls on women?
Hồng nhan phải giống ở đời mãi ru?
1195. Since I did not lead a virtuous former life,
Kiếp xưa đã vụng đường tu,
I must amend my wrongdoings nowadays.
Kiếp này chẳng kẻo đền bù mới xuôi.
It’s over and the vase’s broken anyway,
Dẫu sao bình đã vỡ rồi,
Therefore I’ll pay off this life debt once for all!”
Lấy thân mà trả nợ đời cho xong!”
Then on occasion of a clear moonlit night,
Vừa tuần nguyệt sáng gương trong,
1200. Madam stopped by Kieu’s room and at length advised:
Tú bà ghé lại thong dong dặn dò:
“Entertainment art requires lots of practice,
“Nghề chơi cũng lắm công phu,
And courtesans got to know all the techniques.”
Làng chơi ta phải biết cho đủ điều.”
Kieu said: “When winds and rains are due to ravage,
Nàng rằng: “Mưa gió dập dìu,
If there’s no way to avoid, I have to risk.”
Liều thân thì cũng phải liều thế thôi.”
1205. The wench explained: “If every service’s the same,
Mụ rằng ai cũng như ai,
Why people keep coming to spend money here?
Người ta ai mất tiền hoài đến đây?
There’re lots of exciting things in this career,
Ở trong còn lắm điều hay,
That ensnare men at day, enthrall them at night.
Nỗi đêm khép mở, nỗi ngày riêng chung.
My daughter, learn by heart the following drills:
Này con thuộc lấy làm lòng:
1210. There’re seven conduct steps and eight service skills.
Vành ngoài bảy chữ, vành trong tám nghề.
Serve him till he’s tired and satiated,
Chơi cho liễu chán hoa chê,
Till stone’s mesmerized and life’s captivated.
Cho lăn lóc đá, cho mê mẩn đời.
Now throw your sharp glance, now frown your curved brows,
Khi khoé hạnh, khi nét ngài,
Now chant in praise of moon, now laugh at flowers.
Khi ngâm ngợi nguyệt, khi cười cợt hoa.
1215. Those skills are exclusive methods of our house,
Đều là nghề nghiệp trong nhà,
Acquire all of them and you’ll be all-around.”
Đủ ngần ấy nết mới là người soi.”
Kieu obeyed timidly to the sex lesson,
Gót đầu vâng dạy mấy lời,
But her brows got frowned and her rosy cheek paled.
Dường phai nét nguyệt, dường phai vẻ hồng.
Madam’s words flushed her just only by hearing
Những nghe nói đã thẹn thùng,
1220. Such bizarre merciless and horrendous things!
Nước đời lắm nỗi lạ lùng khắt khe!
She felt bitter to learn those obscenities,
Xót mình cửa các buồng khuê,
The first lesson for a girl of dignity!
Vỡ lòng học lấy những nghề nghiệp hay!
What a shameful brazen face she would become!
Khéo là mặt dạn mày dày!
The lowest scale a human being could be!
Kiếp người đã đến thế này thì thôi.
1225. What a pity for her misplaced destiny!
Thương thay thân phận lạc loài!
Helpless as she was in the hands of others.
Dẫu sao cũng ở tay người biết sao.
