My body’s now light, relieved of all burdens,

Tấm thân rày đã nhẹ nhàng,

Only left unsolved a bit of rights and wrongs.”

Chút còn ân oán đôi đường chưa xong.”

2295. Listening to the story from start to end,

Từ Công nghe nói thuỷ chung,

Lord Tu burst into a thunderous fury.

Bất bình nổi trận đùng đùng sấm vang.

He put in readiness his chosen army,

Nghiêm quân tuyển tướng sẵn sàng,

And gave orders to be done in urgency.

Dưới cờ một lệnh vội vàng ruổi sao.

Under the red banner, his troops swiftly moved,

Ba quân chỉ ngọn cờ đào,

2300. One group went to Wu-hsi, other to Lin-tzu.

Đạo ra Vô Tích, đạo vào Lâm Tri.

Those people who had once deceived and betrayed,

Mấy người phụ bạc xưa kia,

Were identified and captured for query.

Chiếu danh tầm nã bắt về hỏi tra.

A herald with credential was sent forward,

Lại sai lệnh tiễn truyền qua,

To secure the safety of Thuc family.

Giữ giàng họ Thúc một nhà cho yên.

2305. Hoan household’s manageress and Nun Giac Duyen,

Mụ quản gia, vãi Giác Duyên,

Were also officially called for as guests.

Cũng sai lệnh tiễn đem tin rước mời.

Departure’s motive was explained to the troop,

Thệ sư kể hết mọi lời,

All angry they vowed to fulfill the orders.

Lòng lòng cũng giận, người người chấp uy.

Heaven’s law of justice was really awesome,

Đạo trời báo phục chỉn ghê,

2310. By one haul they brought home a net full of crooks.

Khéo thay một mẻ tóm về đầy nơi.

Soldiers in uniform armed with long huge swords

Quân trung gươm lớn giáo dài,

Stood sentry by two lines in and out the court.

Vệ trong thị lập, cơ ngoài song phi.

All ready in neatness and solemnity,

Sẵn sàng tề chỉnh uy nghi,

With weapons and banners all over the yard.

Bác đồng chật đất, tinh kỳ rợp sân.

2315. In the middle was the lord’s tiger-skinned box,

Trướng hùm mở giữa trung quân,

Where Lord Tu and his wife side by side took seat.

Từ Công sánh với phu nhân cùng ngồi.

No sooner had the first round of drums ended

Tiên nghiêm trống chửa dứt hồi,

Than captives were called to stand by at the gate.

Điểm danh trước dẫn chực ngoài cửa viên.

Tu said: “As for wrongs and rights of those concerned,

Từ rằng: “Ân oán hai bên,

2320. It’s up to you to judge and decide their fates.”

Mặc nàng xử quyết báo đền cho minh.”

She said: “I’d resort to your authority,

Nàng rằng: “Muôn cậy uy linh,

First to reward rightly my benefactors.

Hãy xin báo đáp ân tình cho phu.

Then after the favors, I’ll deal with the woes.”

Báo ân rồi sẽ báo thù.”

Tu said: “All these problems I entrust to you.”

Từ rằng: “Việc ấy để cho mặc nàng.”

2325. A man with sword was bid to invite Thuc Sinh,

Cho gươm mời đến Thúc lang,

His face was pale and his body quivering.

Mặt như chàm đổ, mình dường giẽ run.

She said: “Gratitude always weighs like mountain,

Nàng rằng: “Nghĩa nặng nghìn non,

Lin-Tzu’s old man, do you still remember me?

Lâm Tri người cũ chàng còn nhớ không?

Like dawn and dusk stars we could hardly unite,

Sâm Thương chẳng vẹn chữ tòng,

2330. Why, I have never betrayed your gentle heart.

Tại ai há dám phụ lòng cố nhân.

Hundred brocade rolls and thousand silver pounds,

Gấm trăm cuốn, bạc nghìn cân,

Not to pay your favor, just to prove my thanks.

Tạ lòng dễ xứng báo ân gọi là.

Your wife though is very wicked and evil,

Vợ chàng quỉ quái tinh ma,

But now it’s time she meets her equal rival.

Phen này kẻ cắp bà già gặp nhau.

2335. The ant that recently crawled around the bowl

Kiến bò miệng chén chưa lâu,

Is paying back its justice to her trick foul.”

Mưu sâu cũng trả nghĩa sâu cho vừa.”

At this time poor Thuc’s face was a sight to see,

Thúc sinh trông mặt bấy giờ,

Soaked with perspiration like caught in the rain.

Mồ hôi chàng đã như mưa ướt dầm.

His heart unable to restrain fear and joy,

Lòng riêng mừng sợ khôn cầm,

2340. Fear for his wife, secret joy for his old love.

Sợ thay mà lại mừng thầm cho ai.

Next came the old manageress and the nun,

Mụ già, sư trưởng thứ hai,

Ushered forward and invited to their seat.

Thoắt đưa đến trước vội mời lên trên.

Holding their hand, exposing herself, Kieu said:

Dắt tay mở mặt cho nhìn,

“Flower Slave and Pure Spring, both of them I am,

“Hoa nô kia với Trạc Tuyền cũng tôi.

2345. Your kindness at the times of my accident,

Nhớ khi lỡ bước sẩy vời,

Even hill of gold could hardly recompense.

Non vàng chưa dễ đền bồi tấm thương.

Thousand ounces of gold’s but a trite present,

Nghìn vàng gọi chút lễ thường,

In fact, no gold could equal your loving hearts.”

Mà lòng Phiếu Mẫu mấy vàng cho cân.”

The two Samaritan were highly perplexed,

Hai người trông mặt tần ngần,

2350. Half affected by awe, half driven by joy.

Nửa phần khiếp sợ, nửa phần mừng vui.

She said: “Please be relaxed and stay for a while,

Nàng rằng: “Xin hãy rốn ngồi,

To recognize them and witness my revenge.”

Xem cho rõ mặt biết tôi báo thù.”

Order was given to bring the captives in,

Kíp truyền chư tướng hiến phù,

Together with them were proofs of their offense.

Lại đem các tích phạm đồ hậu tra.

2355. Then under banners and dazzling unsheathed swords,

Dưới cờ gươm dáo tuốt ra,

Was submitted Hoan Thu the major culprit.

Chính danh thủ phạm tên là Hoạn Thư.

At her sight, Kieu greeted and sourly said:

Thoắt trông nàng đã chào thưa:

“So in the end you’re also here, young lady?

“Tiểu thư cũng có bây giờ đến đây?

Such woman as you is kind of rarity,

Đàn bà dễ có mấy tay,

2360. The likes of heart and gut are few in history.

Đời xưa mấy mặt, đời này mấy gan.

But a woman should by nature be easy,

Dễ dàng là thói hồng nhan,

The more wicked she’s, the more doleful she’ll be.”

Càng cay nghiệt lắm, càng oan trái nhiều.

Hoan Thu’s mind and soul thoroughly disappeared,

Hoạn Thư hồn lạc phách xiêu,

Her head down on the floor she tried to implore,

Khấu đầu dưới trướng liệu điều kêu ca.

2365. Saying: “I’m but a narrow-minded woman,

Rằng: “Tôi chút dạ đàn bà,

And jealousy’s normal nature of human.

Ghen tuông thì cũng người ta thường tình.

Think of your staying in my shrine writing text,

Nghĩ cho khi gác viết kinh,

Think of your leaving without my pursuing.

Với khi khỏi cửa dứt tình chẳng theo.

At the bottom of my heart I respect you,

Lòng riêng riêng những kính yêu,

2370. But a husband’s not a common thing to yield.

Chồng chung chưa dễ ai chiều cho ai.

I was wrong enough to cause a lot of ills,

Trót lòng gây việc chông gai,

I could only beg your highness for mercy.”

Còn nhờ lượng bể thương bài nào chăng.”

Kieu praised: “You are worthy of the compliment,

Khen rằng: “Thật đã nên rằng,

A woman of cleverness and argument.

Khôn ngoan đến mực nói năng phải lời.

2375. To forgive you is a blessing of your life,

Tha ra thì cũng may đời,

To punish you is a nasty act of mine.

Làm ra thì cũng ra người nhỏ nhen.

You deserve forgiveness due to your remorse.”

Đã lòng tri quá thì nên.”

Then she gave order to spare the jealous wife.

Truyền quân lệnh xuống trướng tiền tha ngay.

Who kowtowed in gratitude on the court ground.

Tạ lòng lạy trước sân mây,

2380. A string of villains were led in from the gate,

Cửa viên lại dắt một dây dẫn vào.

Kieu said: “Under this infinite and high sky,

Nàng rằng: “Lồng lộng trời cao,

Those who harm will be harmed, no one can escape.

Hại nhân nhân hại sự nào tại ta.

First of all are the crooks Dame Bac and Bac Hanh;

Trước là Bạc Hạnh, Bạc Bà,

Followed by the Hawk, the Hound; and then So Khanh,

Bên là Ưng Khuyển, bên là Sở Khanh.

2385. With his bosses Dame Tu and Ma the Scholar,

Tú Bà với Mã Giám Sinh,

These criminals are worthy of punishment.”

Các tên tội ấy đáng tình còn sao?”

Order was given down to the torturers,

Lệnh quân truyền xuống nội đao,

That penalties be meted out properly.

Thề sao thì lại cứ sao gia hình.

Blood then gushed down and flesh crushed up to pieces,

Máu rơi thịt nát tan tành,

2390. Everybody was horrified by the scene.

Ai ai trông thấy hồn kinh phách rời.

Therefore everything is disposed by heaven,

Cho hay muôn sự tại trời,

Betray and be sure someday you’ll be betrayed.

Phụ người chẳng bõ khi người phụ ta.

Those people with perfidious and fiendish hearts,

Mấy người bạc ác tinh ma,

Were duly reaping the result of their deeds.

Mình làm mình chịu kêu mà ai thương.

2395. All the troops gathered around the trial field,

Ba quân đong mặt pháp trường,

Were watching the whole drama in broad daylight.

Thanh thiên bạch nhật rõ ràng cho coi.

When Kieu’s retribution affairs were finished,

Việc nàng báo phục vừa rồi,

Giac Duyen at once asked the permission to quit.

Giác Duyên vội vã gửi lời từ qui.

Kieu said: “This is a thousand-year occasion,

Nàng rằng: “Thiên tải nhất thì,

2400. That old friends come together for a union.

Cố nhân đã dễ mấy khi bàn hoàn.

Tomorrow as weeds and clouds we’ll be dispersed,

Rồi đây bèo hợp mây tan,

Then who knows where the wandering herons are.”

Biết đau hạc nội mây ngàn là đâu.”

The nun answered: “It won’t be long anyway,

Sư rằng: “Cũng chẳng mấy lâu,

We are due to meet again within five years.

Cũng năm năm lại gặp nhau đó mà.

2405. As on my pilgrim at a remote area,

Nhớ ngày hàng cước phương xa,

I met Tam Hop, a bonzess and prophetess.

Gặp sư Tam Hợp vốn là tiên tri.

She predicted that for our reunions,

Bảo cho hội ngộ chi kỳ,

We would meet this year and five years afterwards.

Năm năm là một nữa thì năm năm.

Now her forecast proves itself without errors,

Mới hay tiền định chẳng lầm,

2410. I believe it will be so in the future.

Đã tin điều trước, ắt nhằm việc sau.

Countless attachments still bind us together,

Còn nhiều ân ái với nhau,

Our chance for union still exists, why worry?”

Cơ duyên nào đã hết đâu vội gì?.”

She said: “Prophecy and predestination,

Nàng rằng: “Tiền định tiên tri,

What the bonzess foretold is due to happen.

Lời sư đã dạy ắt thì chẳng sai.

2415. If again you will have a chance to meet her,

Hoạ bao giờ có gặp người,

Please ask her a few words about my future.”

Vì tôi cậy hỏi một lời chung thân.”

Giac Duyen heartily complied with her request,

Giác Duyên vâng dặn ân cần,

Then said goodbye and immediately left.

Tạ từ thoắt đã dời chân cõi ngoài.

Now that all the rights and wrongs duly resolved,

Nàng từ ân oán rạch ròi,

2420. And the tide of woes somewhat calmed down in heart.

Bể oan dường đã vơi vơi cạnh lòng.

She kowtowed in gratitude before Lord Tu:

Tạ ân lạy trước Từ Công:

“This day my wretched life has never dreamt of.

“Chút thân bồ liễu nào mong có rày.

Thank to the help of your thunderous power,

Trộm nhờ sấm sét ra tay,

My heart got rid of what a heavy burden.

Tấc riêng như cất gánh đầy đổ đi.

2425. I will carve in my flesh and bone your favors,

Chạm xương khắc dạ xiết chi,

That all my poor life could hardly compensate.”

Dễ đem gan óc đền nghì trời mây.”

Tu said: “So far could any of our great men

Từ rằng: “Quốc sĩ xưa nay,

In but a day make out their intimate friend?

Chọn người tri kỷ một ngày được chăng?

And will those heroes worthy of their titles

Anh hùng tiếng đã gọi rằng,

2430. Ever meet a wrong deed without punishment.

Giữa đường dẫu thấy bất bằng mà tha.

In addition, your affairs are also mine,

Huống chi việc cũng việc nhà,

Instead you need not show too much gratitude.

Lọ là thâm tạ mới là tri ân.

Pity that you still have your old-aged parents,

Xót nàng còn chút song thân,

And so far you’ve been parted each from other.

Bấy lâu kẻ Việt người Tần cách xa.

2435. Wish I could bring all of you under one roof,

Sao cho muôn dặm một nhà,

So that you’ll see your kin and I’m satisfied.”

Cho người thấy mặt là ta cam lòng.”

Then he ordered banquets among his army,

Vội truyền sửa tiệc quân trung,

A meeting of troops for Kieu’s woe-cleansing rite.

Muôn bình nghìn tướng hợp đồng tẩy oan.
