Cũng là máu chảy ruột mềm chớ sao.

We’ve lived from day to day in expectation,

3070. Those fifteen years were teeming with affections.

Mười lăm năm ấy biết bao nhiêu tình.

Now the broken glass is completely restored,

Bây giờ gương vỡ lại lành,

And Heaven’s reserved the prize for the chosen.

Khuôn thiêng lừa lọc đã đành có nơi.

The sworn-love still lives and the lovers are here,

Còn duyên may lại còn người,

The silver-moon still shines and the oath is there.

Còn vầng trăng cũ, còn lời nguyền xưa.

3075. The fruit is mature enough for the market,

Quả mai ba bảy đang vừa,

Let’s prepare for the wedding of our dearest.”

Đào non sớm liệu xe tơ kịp thì.”

As soon as Van finished speaking, Kieu turned down:

Dứt lời nàng vội gạt đi,

“Such a story of yore why still mention now?

Thà cho ngọn nước thuỷ triều chảy xuôi.”

Kim said: “How weird what you’ve just told really sounds!

Kim rằng: “Nói cũng lạ đời!

But that’s your feeling, how about your past oath?

Dẫu lòng kia vậy, còn lời ấy sao?

3085. The committed word we have solemnly pledged,

Một lời đã trót thâm giao,

Before thick Earth and high Heaven as witness.

Dưới dày có đất, trên cao có trời.

Despite the orbs transform and the stars vanish,

Dẫu rằng vật đổi sao dời,

Even in life or death we’ll keep our promise.

Tử sinh cũng giữ lấy lời tử sinh.

My heart did nothing unfaithful to your love,

Duyên kia có phụ chi tình,

3090. Why do you intend to split our unity?”

Mà toan xẻ gánh chung tình làm hai?”

She said: “A marital life of harmony,

Nàng rằng: “Gia thất riêng hài,

And true love is everybody’s wishful dream.

Chút lòng ân ái ai ai cũng lòng.

I think, however, in the conjugal link,

Nghĩ rằng trong đạo vợ chồng,

A bride should still keep her intact purity.

Hoa thơm phong nhị, trăng vòng tròn gương.

3095. Thousand of gold is worth the virginity,

Chữ trinh đáng giá nghìn vàng,

That she’ll proudly offer him on nuptial night.

Đuốc hoa chẳng thẹn với chàng mai xưa.

But since the time when mishaps happened to me,

Thiếp từ ngộ biến đến giờ,

Flitting bees and butterflies have soiled and spoiled;

Ong qua bướm lại đã thừa xấu xa;

Violent winds and tough rains have wrought dire havoc,

Bấy chầy gió táp mưa sa,

3100. Making the moon to wane, the flower to fade.

Mấy trăng cũng khuyết, mấy hoa cũng tàn.

My chastity was then already bereaved,

Còn chi là cái hồng nhan,

My life is thus finished, what do I still wish for?

Đã xong thân thế còn toan nỗi nào?

Am I too unashamed to feel mortified

Nghĩ mình chẳng hổ mình sao,

That I dare meddle in your life as a wife?

Dám đem trần cấu dự vào bố kinh?

3105. Although I know that you still dearly love me,

Đã hay chàng nặng vì tình,

How could I face you without shame as your bride!

Trông hoa đèn chẳng thẹn mình lắm ru!

From now on I will close my maiden chamber,

Từ rày khép cửa phòng thu,

Though not a nun, I’ll live a religious life.

Chẳng tu thì cũng như tu mới là.

If you still have any thought of our past love,

Chàng dầu nghĩ đến tình xa,

3110. Let us turn ourselves from lovers into friends.

Đem tình cầm sắt đổi ra cầm cờ.

Please don’t mention anything about marriage,

Nói chi kết tóc xe tơ,

That will fill my life with sadness and disgrace.”

Đã buồn cả ruột, lại dơ cả đời.”

He said: “your words are well articulated,

Từ rằng: “Khéo nói nên lời,

But there are always two faces in the truth.

Mà trong lẽ phải có người có ta.

3115. From times of yore, in the womanhood’s ethics,

Xưa nay trong đạo đàn bà,

Virginity has many ways to follow.

Chữ trinh kia cũng có ba bảy đường.

Sometimes it’s normal, sometimes it’s flexible,

Có khi biến, có khi thường,

And certainly not always one way to go.

Có quyền nào phải một đường chấp kinh.

Your chastity was paid off for your piety,

Như nàng lấy hiếu làm trinh,

3120. What dirt could sully your dignified body?

Bụi nào cho đục được mình ấy vay?

Heaven protects and saves you until today,

Trời còn để có hôm nay,

Dispelling the fog and scattering the clouds.

Tan sương đầu ngõ, vén mây giữa trời.

The withered flower is becoming fresher,

Hoa tàn mà lại thêm tươi,

The waned moon ten times than the full moon brighter.

Trăng tàn mà lại hơn mười rằm xưa.

3125. There’s no more anything for you to suspect,

Có điều chi nữa mà ngờ,

And to be lukewarm to me, your poor lover.”

Khách qua đường để hững hờ chàng Tiêu.

Before this all-out reasoning of her man,

Nghe chàng nói đã hết điều,

Who was also supported by her parents,

Hai thân thì cũng quyết theo một bài.

Kieu felt it impossible not to comply,

Hết lời khôn lẽ chối lời,

3130. She lowered her head and secretively sighed.

Cúi đầu nàng những vắn dài thở than.
