Những là phiền muộn đêm ngày,

Xuân thu biết đã đổi thay mấy lần.

Then at the letter exam held by the king,

Chế khoa gặp hội tràng văn,

2860. Both Vuong and Kim got the doctorate degree.

Vương Kim cùng chiếm bảng xuân một ngày.

So the gate was open for them to glory,

Cửa trời rộng mở đường mây,

Honor in capital and fame in homeland.

Hoa chào ngõ hạnh, hương bay dặm phần.

Reminiscent of his family’s hard times,

Chàng Vương nhớ đến xa gần,

Young Vuong went to Old Chung’s to show gratitude.

Sang nhà Chung lão tạ ân chu tuyền.

2865. And to award him for his erstwhile kindness,

Tình xưa ân trả nghĩa đền,

Vuong also knotted wedlock with Chung’s daughter.

Gia thân lại mới kết duyên Châu Trần.

As for Kim since becoming a courtier,

Kim từ nhẹ bước thanh vân,

His thought and love for her grew even stronger.

Nỗi nàng càng nghĩ xa gần càng thương.

With whom had he promised his jade-and-gold pledge?

Ấy ai dặn ngọc thề vàng?

2870. With whom was he now sharing his win and wealth?

Bây giờ Kim mã Ngọc đường với ai?

A weed carried away by the waves she was,

Ngọn bèo chân sóng lạc loài,

He thought of his glory and missed his lost girl.

Nghĩ mình vinh hiển, thương người lưu ly.

Then he was assigned to the post of Lin-tzu

Vâng ra ngoại nhậm Lâm Tri,

A far-off province with his full family.

Quan san nghìn dặm thê nhi một đoàn.

2875. During the leisure time in his new office,

Cầm đường ngày tháng thanh nhàn,

He used to entertain with songs and music.

Sớm khuya tiếng hạc tiếng đàn tiêu dao.

Then while sleeping in her rose-curtained chamber,

Phòng xuân trướng rủ hoa đào,

Van suddenly saw in a dream her sister.

Nàng Vân nằm bỗng chiêm bao thấy nàng.

When awake she told her husband the story,

Tỉnh ta mới rỉ cùng chàng,

2880. Who was snatched by misgiving and certainty.

Nghe lời chàng cũng hai đường tin nghi.

He contrasted the names Lin-ch’ing with Lin-tzu,

Nọ Lâm Thanh với Lâm Tri,

One word’s difference could be the cause of error.

Khác nhau một chữ hoặc khi có lầm.

The like souls of two sisters sought each other,

Trong cơ thanh khí tương tầm,

And perhaps there would be some good news herein.

Ở đây hoặc có giai âm chăng là.

2885. He at once went to his post for a query,

Thăng đường chàng mới hỏi tra,

Hoa Do, an old clerk, responded politely:

Hoa Đô một kẻ lại già thưa lên:

Tú Bà cùng Mã Giám Sinh,

Đi mua người ở Bắc Kinh đưa về,

Thuy Kieu, a girl of matchless beauty and skill,

Thuý Kiều tài sắc ai bì,

Of excellent music and poetry as well.

Có nghề đàn lại đủ nghề văn thơ.

Being very adamant in chastity,

Kiên trinh chẳng phải gan vừa,

She risked her life but then was duped into shame.

Liều mình thế ấy, phải lừa thế kia.

2895. After miseries and humiliations,

Phong trần chịu đã ê chề,

Silk of marriage weaved her to a man named Thuc.

Dây duyên sau lại xe về Thúc lang.

But his wife was utterly cruel and crooked,

Phải tay vợ cả phũ phàng,

Who had her kidnapped to Wu-hsi for torture.

Bắt về Vô Tích toan đường bẻ hoa.

Fearful for her life, she had to run away,

Dứt mình nàng phải trốn ra,

2900. Unluckily she fell into Dame Bac’s house.

Chẳng may lại gặp một nhà Bạc kia.

They bought and traded her as a merchandise,

Thoắt buôn về, thoắt bán đi,

And once again her life floated like a cloud.

Mây trôi bèo nổi thiếu gì là nơi.

Then one day she ran into a gentleman

Bỗng đâu lại gặp một người,

Of unequal power and authority.

Hơn đời trí dũng, nghiêng trời uy linh.

2905. His troops, consisted of ten thousand strong men,

Trong tay mười vạn tinh binh,

Arrived and stationed packed in Lin-tzu city.

Kéo về đóng chật một thành Lâm Tri.

Kieu looked into the rights and wrongs she’d endured

Tóc tơ các tích mọi khi,

Had them awarded or redressed properly.

Oán thì trả oán, ân thì trả ân.

A woman of righteousness and piety,

Đã nên có nghĩa có nhân,

2910. She received esteem and respect near and far.

Trước sau trọn vẹn, xa gần được khen.

Yet I do not know the name of her hero,

Chưa từng được họ được tên,

About this, please sir, ask Thuc Sinh and you’ll know.”

Sự này hỏi Thúc sinh viên mới tường,”

On the distinct declaration of the clerk,

Nghe lời Đô nói rõ ràng,

Invitation card was issued to Thuc Sinh.

Tức thì đưa thiếp mời chàng Thúc Sinh.

2915. And questions were poured upon him about her,

Nỗi nàng hỏi hết phân minh,

About the hero her husband and his name.

Chồng con đâu tá, tính danh là gì?

Thuc Sinh said: “That was a tumultuous time,

Thúc rằng: “Gặp buổi loạn ly,

I asked the soldiers and knew every detail.

Trong quân tôi hỏi thiếu gì tóc tơ.

The great lord’s name is Hai and his surname Tu,

Đại vương tên Hải họ Từ,

2920. An extreme fighter who can defeat thousand.

Đánh quen trăm trận, sức dư muôn người.

It’s no wonder that when they met in T’ai-ch’u,

Gặp nàng khi ở Châu Thai

The hero and the beauty fell in love.

Lạ gì quốc sắc thiên tài phải duyên.

He maintained his heroic fighting for years,

Vẫy vùng trong bấy nhiêu niên,

Making earth-shaking and sky-trembling exploits.

Làm cho động địa kinh thiên đùng đùng.

2925. His main army was positioned in the east,

Đại quân đồn đóng cõi đông,

But how he was faring then I do not know.”

Về sau chẳng biết vân mồng làm sao.”

Kim listened carefully to all the details,

Nghe tường ngành ngọn tiêu hao,

And felt in his heart a tremendous sorrow:

Lòng riêng chàng luống lao đao thẩn thờ:

“What a pity for her, a leaf in the wind!

“Xót thay chiếc lá bơ vơ!

2930. When would she shake off all the dust of her fate?

Kiếp trần biết giũ bao giờ cho xong?

A flower driven away by the current,

Hoa trôi nước chảy xuôi dòng,

Tossed by misfortunes and ached with partitions.

Xót thân chìm nổi, đau lòng hợp tan.

Though our erstwhile oaths have been wholly broken,

Lời xưa đã lỗi muôn vàn,

Still the fragrance and the lute are here to stay.

Mảnh hương còn đó, phím đàn còn đây.

2935. And while the lute with its strings looks soulless now,

Đàn cầm khéo ngẩn ngơ dây,

Will our love incense be burnt again this life?

Lửa hương biết có kiếp này nữa thôi?

How could I, so long as she’s still in exile,

Bình bồng còn chút xa xôi,

Contentedly enjoy this wealth and glory?

Đỉnh chung sao nỡ ăn ngồi cho an?

I wish I could soon resign from my office,

Rắp mong treo ấn từ quan,

2940.To go in search of her up hill and down vale,

Mấy sông cũng lội, mấy ngàn cũng pha.

Risking myself even in the flames of war,

Giấn mình trong áng can qua,

Defying life and death for our reunion.

Vào sinh ra tử hoạ là thấy nhau.

But thinking of the high sky and the vast land,

Nghĩ điều trời thẳm vực sâu,

I don’t know where to find her- a traceless bird!”

Bóng chim tăm cá biết đâu mà tìm!”

2945. So he delayed his plan waiting for her news,

Những là nấn ná đợi tin,

While shines followed rains as years elapsed in time.

Nắng mưa biết đã mấy phen đổi dời.

Then suddenly came from the Court an edict,

Năm mây bỗng thấy chiếu trời,

A clear-cut order written down by the king,

Khâm ban sắc chỉ đến nơi rành rành.

Transferring him to the office of Nan-king,

Kim thì cải nhậm Nam Bình,

2950. And Vuong also to the office of Fu-yang.

Chàng Vương cũng cải nhậm thành Phú Dương.

Hurriedly they prepared for their departure,

Sắm sanh xe ngựa vội vàng,

And took the same road in their trip to their posts.

Hai nhà cùng thuận một đường phó quan.

On the way they heard of the rebel’s failure,

Xảy nghe thế giặc đã tan,

Waves calmed in Fu-kien and fire quenched in Che-kiang.

Sóng êm Phúc Kiến, lửa tàn Chiết Giang.

2955. Spurred by the tidings Kim then proposed to Vuong,

Được tin Kim mới rủ Vương,

That they would by the way look for their poor girl.

Tiện đường cùng lại tìm nàng sau xưa.

It was when they arrived in Hang-chow City,

Hàng Châu đến đó bấy giờ,

That they got the information in detail.

Thật tin hỏi được tóc tơ rành rành.

It said: “On that day of a fierce fighting,

Rằng: “Ngày hôm nọ giao binh,

2960. Lord Tu lost his prudence and was killed afield.

Thất cơ Từ đã thu linh trận tiền.

Kieu was not rewarded for her services,

Nàng Kiều công cả chẳng đền,

But was forced to wed a local officer.

Lệnh quan lại bắt ép duyên thổ tù.

She had thrown her jade body in the river,

Nàng đà gieo ngọc trầm châu,

Ch’ien-tang is now the grave of a great woman.”

Sông Tiền Đường đó ấy mồ hồng nhan.”

2965. Oh, separation in place of union!

Thương ôi không hợp mà tan!

The house in glory but she in unjust death.

Một nhà vinh hiển riêng oan một nàng.

They displayed her tablet to invoke her soul,

Chiêu hồn thiết vị lễ thường,

An altar by the river to clear her woes.

Giải oan lập một đàn tràng bên sông.

The tides, like endless tiny silver mountains,

Ngọn triều non bạc trùng trùng,

2970. Seemed to remind people of her falling wing.

Vời trông còn tưởng cánh hồng lúc gieo.

They wondered, in the sad sea, with their deep love,

Tình thâm bể thảm lạ điều,

Where her sea bird’s incarnated soul[47] had flown?

Nào hồn tinh vệ biết theo chốn nào?
