All her erstwhile misfortunes were cleared up now,

Nạn xưa trút sạch làu làu,

But her whereabouts, how could her youth’s love know?

Duyên xưa chưa dễ biết đâu chốn nầy.

Whilst she withstood those countless adversities,

Nỗi nàng tai nạn đã dầy,

2740. Her love, Kim Trong, endured as tough tragedies.

Nỗi chàng Kim Trọng bấy chầy mới thương.

Since he made the thousand-mile funeral trip,

Từ ngày muôn dặm phù tang,

From Liao yang he came home half a year later.

Nữa năm ở đất Liêu Dương lại nhà.

He quickly went to her house for a visit,

Vội sang vườn Thuý dò la,

But all before his eyes was a different scene.

Nhìn xem phong cảnh nay đà khác xưa.

2745. A wild reed-and-weed covered patch of garden,

Đầy vườn cỏ mọc lau thưa,

Windows open-mouthed and walls weather-beaten.

Song trăng quạnh quẽ, vách mưa rã rời.

Not a lone soul was seen in the surroundings,

Trước sau nào thấy bóng người,

But the last year’s peach blossoms smiled with the wind.

Hoa đào năm ngoái còn cười gió đông.

Languid sparrows were circling the empty house,

Xập xoè én liệng lầu không,

2750. Grass filled the land and moss concealed the shoes’ marks.

Cỏ lan mặt đất, rêu phong dấu giày.

Thorns and spikes jostled at the end of the wall,

Cuối tường gai góc mọc đầy,

Hiding the pathways two of them walked last year.

Đi về này những lối này năm xưa.

A somber stillness overwhelmed everything,

Chung quanh lặng ngắt như tờ,

With whom could he now express his heart feelings?

Nỗi niềm tâm sự bây giờ hỏi ai?

2755. Some neighbor knew him and came for a greeting,

Láng giềng có kẻ sang chơi,

Kim posed discreet questions about his concerns.

Lân la sẽ hỏi một hai sự tình.

Of old Vuong, he’d been caught in a law problem,

Hỏi ông ông mắc tụng đình,

Of Kieu, she’d sold herself for her dad’s ransom.

Hỏi nàng nàng đã bán mình chuộc cha.

Of the house, it’d moved to a far location.

Hỏi nhà nhà đã dời xa,

2760. Of younger brother and sister, Vuong and Van,

Hỏi chàng Vương với cùng là Thuý Vân.

Both’d been fallen into hardship and decline,

Đều là sa sút khó khăn,

Living from hand to mouth in labor of hire.

May thuê viết mướn kiếm ăn lần hồi.

These news, like a thunder from across the sky,

Điều đâu sét đánh ngang trời,

Struck him out of the blue and left him half dead.

Thoắt nghe chàng thoắt rụng rời xiết bao.

2765. He tried to find out the family’s address,

Hỏi thăm di trú nơi nao,

And groped his way right to their habitation.

Đánh đường chàng mới tìm vào tận nơi.

A tattered mud-walled and thatch-roofed residence,

Nhà tranh vách đất tả tơi,

With worn-out reed blinds and ragged sparse bamboo screens.

Lau treo rèm nát, trúc cài phên thưa.

Before the house, a rain-soaked earthen grass yard,

Một sân đất cỏ dầm mưa,

2770. Where Kim stood all bewildered and dejected.

Càng ngao ngán nỗi, càng ngơ ngẩn đường.

He ventured to raise his voice outside the wall,

Đánh liều lên tiếng ngoài tường,

Young Vuong heard and hastily ran out to him,

Chàng Vương nghe tiếng vội vàng chạy ra.

And holding his hand, led him into the house,

Dắt tay vội rước vào nhà,

From the rear old Vuong couple at once got out.

Mé sau viên ngoại ông bà ra ngay.

2775. Weeping and moaning, they bewailed their mishaps:

Khóc than kể hết niềm tây:

“Young man, have you ever known our wretchedness?

“Chàng ôi biết nỗi nước này cho chưa?

Our daughter Kieu, whose fate was as frail as mist,

Kiều nhi phận mỏng như tờ,

Has betrayed her betrothal oath made with you.

Một lời đã lỗi tóc tơ với chàng.

In our terrible domestic disaster,

Gặp cơn gia biến lạ thường,

2780. She had sold herself to ransom her father.

Bán mình nó phải tìm đường cứu cha.

Leaving home with a heart of pains and sorrows,

Dùng dằng khi bước chân ra,

In her endless grief, time and again, she told

Cực trăm nghìn nỗi, dặn ba bốn lần.

That because of her solemn pledge with your love,

Trót lời nặng với lang quân,

She wanted her sister Van to take her place.

Mượn con em nó Thuý Vân thay lời.

2785. So as to return somewhat of your kindness,

Gọi là trả chút nghĩa người,

That thousand lives later she’ll never forget.

Sầu này dằng dặc muôn đời chưa quên.

Having betrayed your genuine love this life,

Kiếp này duyên đã phụ duyên,

She promised to compensate it in the next.

Dạ đài còn biết sẽ đền lai sinh.

These firm and clear words she said time and again,

Mấy lời ký chú đinh ninh,

2790. Till they were engraved in our hearts when she left.

Ghi lòng để dạ cất mình ra đi.

What an ill fate of yours, my wretched daughter!

Phận sao bạc bấy Kiều nhi!

Your Kim is right here but where are you adrift?”

Chàng Kim về đó con thì ở đâu?

The more they talked the deeper they fell in grief,

Ông bà càng nói càng đau,

The more he heard the bigger grew his distress.

Chàng càng nghe nói càng dàu như dưa.

2795. He shook himself strongly moaning and crying,

Vật mình vẫy gió tuôn mưa,

His eyes soaked with tears and his soul lost in maze.

Dầm dề giọt lệ, thẩn thờ hồn mai.

Anguish and faintness took him at intervals,

Đau đòi đoạn, ngất đòi thôi,

Waking from a swoon, he’d cry till another.

Tỉnh ra lại khóc, khóc rồi lại mê.

Old Vuong, seeing him in acute suffering,

Thấy chàng đau nỗi biệt ly,

2800. Restrained himself and tried to soothe the young man:

Ngập ngừng ông mới vỗ về giải khuyên:

“Now it’s too late as wood’s been made into boat,

“Bây giờ ván đã đóng thuyền,

Her cruel fate kept her from her faithful love.

Đã đành phận bạc khôn đền tình chung.

Though you have utmost regret for my daughter,

Quá thương chút nghĩa đèo bòng,

Still should you not forget your own precious life?”

Nghìn vàng thân ấy dễ hòng bỏ sao?”

2805. The couple showered Kim with countless comforts,

Dỗ dành khuyên giải trăm chiều,

That instead but kindled his fire of sorrows.

Lửa phiền càng dập càng khêu mối phiền.

They showed him his jewels of commitment oath,

Thề xưa giở đến kim hoàn,

And the lute and incense of their olden days.

Của xưa lại giở đến đàn với hương.

The more he looked at them, the more he missed her,

Sinh càng trông thấy càng thương,

2810. And with himself was more angry than ever.

Gan càng tức tối, ruột càng xót xa.

Saying: “it’s because of me who’d been away,

Rằng: “Tôi trót quá chân ra,

That she became an aimless drifting flower.

Để cho đến nỗi trôi hoa dạt bèo.

Together we’ve exchanged much pledge and promise,

Cùng nhau thề thốt đã nhiều,

And those gold-and-stone words are not for nothing.

Những điều vàng đá phải điều nói không.

2815. Though not married, we’re almost wife and husband,

Chưa chăn gối, cũng vợ chồng,

How could I have the heart to sever this bond?

Lòng nào mà nỡ dứt lòng cho đang?

No matter how much time and money it costs,

Bao nhiêu của, mấy ngày đường,

So long as I live, I’m resolved to find her.”

Còn tôi tôi một gặp nàng mới thôi.”

Unable to describe all his love in words,

Nỗi thương nói chẳng hết lời,

2820. He finally sobbed his good-bye and retired.

Tạ từ sinh mới sụt sùi trở ra.

He swiftly tidied up his house and garden,

Vội về sửa chốn vườn hoa,

Then invited the couple to come and stay.

Rước mời viên ngoại ông bà cùng sang.

He provided them with good cares night and day,

Thần hôn chăm chút lễ thường,

And served them as well as Kieu had done before.

Dưỡng thân thay tấm lòng nàng ngày xưa.

2825. He copied poems with ink made from his tears,

Đinh ninh mài lệ chép thư,

And sent searchers or agents for her tidings.

Cắt người tìm tõi, đưa tờ nhắn nhe.

A lot of money and labor had been spent,

Biết bao công mướn của thuê,

He twice himself braved the long trip to Lin-ch’ing,

Lâm Thanh mấy độ đi về dặm khơi.

Searching for her where she was not to be found,

Người một nơi hỏi một nơi,

2830. The sky was too large to know her whereabouts.

Mênh mông nào biết bể trời nơi nao.

Sinh became more and more eager and depressed,

Sinh càng thảm thiết khát khao,

As if his heart was burnt and his liver torn.

Như nung gan sắt, như bào lòng son.

Lovesick gradually withered his spirit,

Ruột tằm ngày một héo hon,

Exposure emaciated his body.

Tuyết sương ngày một hao mòn mình ve.

2835. Intermittently awake and unconscious,

Thẩn thờ lúc tỉnh lúc mê,

His tears mixed with blood and his soul lost in dreams.

Máu theo nước mắt hồn lìa chiêm bao.

The old Vuongs worried so much about his health,

Xuân huyên lo sợ xiết bao,

Fearing of unexpected dire happening.

Quá ra khi đến thế nào mà hay.

In a hurry they prepared for the wedding,

Vội vàng sắm sửa chọn ngày,

2840. To tie the nuptial knot between Van and him.

Duyên Vân sớm đã xe dây cho chàng.

Graciousness harmonized with literature,

Người yểu điệu, kẻ văn chương,

A girl of beauty and a man of letter.

Trai tài gái sắc xuân đang vào thì.

Even in the new happiness however,

Tuy rằng vui chữ vu qui,

The nuptial joy could not override his gloom.

Vui này đã cất sầu kia được nào.

2845. During the time of their conjugal living,

Khi ăn ớ, lúc ra vào,

The warmer the new love, the deeper the old.

Càng âu duyên mới, càng dào tình xưa.

He kept on missing the girl of his first love,

Nỗi nàng nhớ đến bao giờ,

Tears flowed in excess and heart ached without end.

Tuôn châu đòi trận, vò tơ trăm vòng.

At times when he was alone in his chamber,

Có khi vắng vẻ thư phòng,

2850. He burned the incense and played the lute of yore.

Đốt lò hương cũ phím đồng ngày xưa.

The woeful sounds of music moaned and deplored,

Bẻ bai rủ rỉ tiếng tơ,

A wind blew the fragrant smoke and stirred the blind.

Trầm bay lạt khói, gió đưa lay rèm.

As if in the room or by the verandah,

Dường như bên nóc bên thềm,

Her voice was echoing and her shade flitting.

Tiếng Kiều đồng vọng, bóng xiêm mơ màng.

2855. Having had deeply carved her image in heart,

Bởi lòng tạc đá ghi vàng,

He was apt to see her when he thought of her.

Tưởng nàng nên lại thấy nàng về đây.
