Then an abnormal coincidence did happen,

Cơ duyên đâu bỗng lạ sao,

From nowhere Nun Giac Duyen was due to arrive.

Giác Duyên đâu bỗng tìm vào đến nơi.

2975. Of the name on the tablet at her first sight,

Trông lên linh vị chữ bài,

All aghast she asked: “Who are you, gentlemen?

Thất kinh mới hỏi: “Những người đâu ta?

What is your relationship with this woman?

Với nàng thân thích gần xa?

Why do you mourn a person who’s still alive?”

Người còn sao bỗng làm ma khóc người?”

Almost dumbfounded and staggered at the news,

Nghe tin ngơ ngác rụng rời,

2980. They gathered round the nun, telling and asking:

Xúm quanh kể lể rộn lời hỏi tra:

“We are her father, her mother, her husband,

“Này chồng này mẹ này cha,

Her younger brother and her sister in law.

Này là em ruột này là em dâu.

We got this bad news of her quite a long time,

Thật tin nghe đã bấy lâu,

Now what you say, Reverend, is a wonder!”

Pháp sư dạy thế sự đâu lạ dường!”

2985. The nun said: “Karma[48] destined me to meet her,

Sư rằng: “Nhân quả với nàng,

First we met at Lin-tzu, second at Ch’ien-t’ang.

Lâm Tri buổi trước, Tiền Đường buổi sau.

When she drowned her pearl body in the river,

Khi nàng gieo ngọc trầm châu.

I was there to meet her and escort her home.

Đón nhau tôi đã gặp nhau rước về.

We’re now in shelter of a Buddhist temple,

Cùng nhau nương cửa Bồ Đề,

2990. That shrine of grass is not far away from here.

Thảo am đó cũng gần kề chẳng xa.

Though at Buddha’s shade and in those days of peace,

Phật tiền ngày bạc lân la,

She is constantly immersed in homesickness.”

Đăm đăm nàng cũng nhớ nhà khôn khuây.”

Everyone were overjoyed hearing the news,

Nghe tin nở mặt nở mày,

What other joy can be greater than this one?

Mừng nào lại quá mừng này nữa chăng?

2995. Kieu was like a leaf snatched off from the jungle,

Từ phen chiếc lá lìa rừng,

Looking for her was almost impossible.

Thăm tìm luống những liệu chừng nước mây.

They were so sure she had committed suicide,

Rõ ràng hoa rụng hương bay,

And only wished to meet her in the next life.

Kiếp sau hoạ thấy kiếp này hẳn thôi.

Thinking that they and she lived in diverse worlds,

Minh dương đôi ngã chắc rồi,

3000. They never expected to see her on earth.

Cõi trần mà lại thấy người cữu nguyên.

Together gratefully to Giac Duyen they bowed,

Cùng nhau lạy tạ Giác Duyên,

And without delay in her walk they followed.

Bộ hành một lũ theo liền một khi.

While struggling through the grass and reed in their march,

Bẻ lau vạch cỏ tìm đi,

They could not help doubting what they had just heard.

Tình thâm luống hãy hồ nghi nữa phần.

3005. Taking the crooked path along the river’s curve,

Quanh co theo dải giang tân,

Through the reeds they arrived at the temple’s yard.

Khỏi rừng lau đã tới sân Phật đường.

Giac Duyen raised the voice to call her destined friend,

Giác Duyên lên tiếng gọi nàng,

From inside the room Kieu hastened to get out.

Buồng trong vội dạo sen vàng bước ra.

There she looked and saw all of her family:

Nhìn xem đủ mặt một nhà,

3010. Her mother and father, gorgeous and healthy,

Xuân già còn khoẻ, huyên già còn tươi.

Her younger sister and brother in good shape,

Hai em phương trưởng hoà hai,

And young Kim, the lover of her olden days.

Nọ chàng Kim đó là người ngày xưa.

Asking herself if she was in present time,

Tưởng bây giờ là bao giờ,

And what her open eyes saw was but a dream.

Rõ ràng mở mắt còn ngờ chiêm bao.

3015. Tears fell in drops like rain soaking their garments,

Giọt châu thánh thót quẹn bào,

While joy and pity mixed with their afections.

Mừng mừng tủi tủi xiết bao là tình.

Plummeting herself at her old mother’s knees,

Huyên già dưới gối gieo mình,

Kieu sobbed out from head to tail her miseries:

Khóc than mình kể sự mình đầu đuôi.

“Ever since I was stray to the alien land,

“Từ con lưu lạc quê người,

3020. A weed hurled and tossed by waves for fifteen years.

Bèo trôi sóng vỗ chốc mười lăm năm.

I thought I’d been drown for good in the river,

Tính rằng sông nước cát lầm,

And have no hope of seeing you in this life.”

Kiếp này ai lại còn cầm gặp đây.”

Her parents held her hands and looked at her face,

Ông bà trông mặt cầm tay,

Their daughter looked the same as the day she left.

Dung quang chẳng khác chi ngày bước ra.

3025. After years of adversity exposure,

Bấy chầy dãi nguyệt dầu hoa,

She’d lost somewhat of her freshness and vigor.

Mười phần xuân có gầy ba bốn phần.

No scale could weigh the joy of their reunion,

Nỗi mừng biết lấy gì cân,

Greeting words and touching tales were abundant.

Lời tan hợp chuyện xa gần thiếu đâu.

Sister and brother lavished her with questions,

Hai em hỏi trước han sau,

3030. While Kim changing from gloom to bliss was watching.

Đứng trông chàng cũng trở sầu làm tươi.

Altogether they kowtowed before Buddha,

Quây nhau lạy trước Phật đài,

Thanking the Great Compassion for her rebirth.

Tái sinh trần tạ lòng người từ bi.

When the palanquin urged them for home return,

Kiệu hoa giục giã tức thì,

Old Vuong ordered that Kieu be escorted too.

Vương ông dạy rước cùng về một nơi.

3035. She said: “I’m but a kind of fallen flower,

Nàng rằng: “Chút phận hoa rơi,

Half my life was spent tasting all bitterness.

Nửa đời nếm trải mọi mùi đắng cay.

I thought myself banished with cloud and water,

Tính rằng mặt nước chân mây,

Without any hope of such a union day.

Lòng nào còn tưởng có rày nữa không.

Now I’m reborn and found myself among you,

Được rày tái thế tương phùng,

3040. And all the thirst of my heart is satisfied.

Khát khao đã thoả tấm lòng lâu nay.

As I’ve retreated to this secluded shrine,

Đã đem mình bỏ am mây,

Living among grass and trees befits my age.

Tuổi này gửi với cỏ cây cũng vừa,

The zen taste of salted pickles suits my tongue,

Mùi thiền đã bén muối dưa,

The zen hue of brown clothes suits my nature.

Màu thiền ăn mặc đã ưa nâu sồng.

3045. My heart’s been extinct of all worldly affairs,

Sự đời đã tắt lửa lòng,

Why should I shove back in this realm of dust?

Còn chen vào chốn bụi hồng làm chi?

It is not good to leave a job unfinished,

Dở dang nào có hay gì,

To nunhood I’m dedicated till my death.

Đã tu tu trót qua thì thì thôi.

Her life-saving deed is as large as the sky,

Trùng sinh ân nặng bể trời,

3050. How could I have the heart to cut off and depart?”

Lòng nào nỡ dứt nghĩa người ra đi?”

Old Vuong said: “Each time has its own condition,

Ông rằng: “Bỉ thử nhất thì,

To be nun was right when circumstance obliged.

Tu hành thì cũng phải khi tòng quyền.

But now if you’re to follow God or Buddha,

Phải điều cầu Phật cầu tiên,

Who’ll do the duty of daughter and lover?

Tình kia hiếu nọ ai đền cho đây?

3055. You owe your life to the Buddhist virtuous nun,

Độ sinh nhờ đức cao dày,

We’ll build a shrine and have her come live with us.”

Lập am rồi sẽ rước thầy ở chung.”

She complied with her father’s word and gave in,

Nghe lời nàng phải chiều lòng,

They said goodbye to the Buddhist nun then left.

Giã sư giã cảnh đều cùng bước ra.
