Then the household held a banquet of union,

Nhà vừa mở tiệc đoàn viên,

Flowers flushed at candles, pinks glowed on curtain

Hoa soi ngọn đuốc, hồng chen bức là.

The married couple bowed as husband and wife,

Cùng nhau giao bái một nhà,

And completed all the wedding protocols.

Lễ đà đủ lễ, đôi đà xứng đôi.

3135. Cup after cup they enjoyed their nuptial night,

Động phòng dìu dặt chén mồi,

Dazed by their new bond and grieved for their past love.

Bâng khuâng duyên mới, ngậm ngùi tình xưa.

As lotus sprout and peach bud when they first met,

Những từ sen ngó đào tơ,

Until this present time fifteen years had passed.

Mười lăm năm mới bây giờ là đây.

Tales of their meeting, parting, and gathering,

Tình duyên ấy, hợp tan này,

3140. Mixed their joy with angst till the old moon got high.

Bi hoan mấy nỗi đêm chầy trăng sao.

By the brocade drape and in the dead of night,

Canh khuya bức gấm rủ thao,

Her rosy cheeks glowed under the nuptial light.

Dưới đèn tỏ rạng má đào thêm xuân.

Now they encountered as lover met lover,

Tình nhân lại gặp tình nhân,

As old-timed flower and bee came together.

Hoa xưa ong cũ mấy phân chung tình,

3145. She said: “Such has been my unfortunate fate,

Nàng rằng: “Phận thiếp đã đành,

A worthless being with a wasted body.

Có làm chi nữa cái mình bỏ đi.

Because of your faithfulness and loyalty,

Nghĩ chàng nghĩa cũ tình ghi,

I gave in to your wish and became your wife.

Chiều lòng gọi có xướng tuỳ mảy may.

But in my heart I was utterly ashamed,

Riêng lòng đã thẹn lắm thay,

3150. Feeling improperly brazen and barefaced.

Cũng đà mặt dạn mày dày khó coi.

As for the outward expressions of your love,

Những như âu yếm vành ngoài,

I would yield as a show of my affection.

Còn toan mở mặt với người cho qua.

But if you imitate the ways of others,

Lại như những thói người ta,

Picking dull perfumes and plucking pale flowers;

Vớt hương dưới đất, bẻ hoa cuối mùa.

3155. And forcing me into dirty sexual games,

Khéo là giở nhuốc bày trò,

That won’t be love anymore but purely hate.

Còn tình đâu nữa mà thù  đấy thôi.

If you return my love with bad intention,

Người yêu ta xấu với người,

You will betray me ten times more than usual.

Yêu nhau thì lại bằng mười phụ nhau.

If you care about home and heredity,

Cửa nhà dầu tính về sau,

3160. There’s still my younger sister in place of me.

Thì còn em đó, lọ cầu chị đây.

This is all that remains of my purity,

Chữ trinh còn một chút này,

Hold it tight instead of crushing asunder.

Chẳng cầm cho vững, lại giày cho tan.

There’re plenty of amorous delights ahead,

Còn nhiều ân ái chan chan,

Why waste your time fondling this faded flower?”

Hay gì vầy cánh hoa tàn mà chơi?”

3165. He said: “We’d taken oath to be together,

Chàng rằng: “Gắn bó một lời,

Then out of the blue we lost one another.

Bỗng không cá nước chim trời lỡ nhau.

How I pity you, who’ve been exiled so far,

Xót người lưu lạc bấy lâu,

And suffered so much for breaking your sworn pledge.

Tưởng thề thốt nặng, cũng đau đớn nhiều.

We loved one another, risking our lives for it,

Thương nhau sinh tử đã liều,

3170. We reunite now and our love stays intact.

Gặp nhau còn chút bấy nhiêu là tình.

As spring willow you always look young and fresh,

Chừng xuân tơ liễu còn xanh,

And I’ve thought you still have the desire of flesh.

Nghĩ rằng chưa thoát khỏi vành ái ân.

But in fact you’re pure like immaculate glass,

Gương trong chẳng chút bụi trần,

And your firm words filled me with much more respect.

Một lời quyết hẳn muôn phần kính thêm.

3175. I have been scouring the world for you thus far,

Bấy lâu đáy bể mò kim,

Urged by faithful love not by frivolous lust.

Là theo vàng đá, phải tìm trăng hoa.

Fortunately together under one roof,

Ai ngờ lại hợp một nhà,

Sex won’t be needed in our marital life.”

Lọ là chăn gối mới ra sắc cầm.”

On his word she tidied her dress and hairpin,

Nghe lời sửa áo cài trâm,

3180. And bowing her head she prayed to High Heaven:

Khấu đầu lạy tạ cao thâm nghìn trùng:

“My ruined life now being cleansed of dirt and filth,

“Thân tàn gạn đục khơi trong,

It’s thanks to the good heart of my honest man.

Là nhờ quân tử khác lòng người ta.

His words of confidence are so intimate,

Mấy lời tâm phúc ruột rà,

Such understanding is truly empathic.

Tương tri dường ấy mới là tương tri.

3185. His protection and care are more than enough,

Chở che đùm bọc thiếu gì,

And help my life regain its honor tonight.”

Trăm năm danh tiết cũng vì đêm nay.”
